Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s refusal to engage the media before and after being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo yesterday has increased protests at home and abroad about his receiving this honour.

This is expected to continue into the election campaign he faces in Ethiopia next year.

Domestic rivals of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who equal if not outnumber his supporters in Ethiopia, say his crackdown on opponents is not appropriate for a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

His international critics say the peace he forged with neighboring President Isaias Afwerki has not improved the lives of Eritreans.

And they condemn Ahmed’s use of lethal force against protestors in Somalia and the hard line he takes on access to the Nile where Ethiopia is building a dam that will cut water to Sudan and Egypt downstream.

White-coated and masked Egyptologists have begun restoring  the badly damaged coffin of the boy Pharaoh Tutankamun found nearly a century ago.

It will go on display at the new grand museum opening next year overlooking the pyramids of Giza.

The gilded coffin is the the outer container of three concentric coffins containing the mummy of Kind Tutankamun.

It was left at Luxor on the Nine from where it was moved amidst strict security last month.

Restoration will take eight months after which it  will go on display with the two inner coffins in the largest museum the planet devoted to a single civilization.

Its value is impossible to determine.

A 3500 year old bust of the 19-year old Tutankamun sold at Christie’s in London for $6 million last month.

The constitutional declaration signed by Sudan’s military and civilian leaders creates a pathway to democracy in the giant on the Nile.

But the great deal of  political  toil lies ahead for the country’s new rulers.

It was vital to get something inked in Sudan after a week of violence that saw schoolchildren cut down by paramilitaries.

The declaration signed in Khartoum presses all the buttons.

But the real deal, naming the sovereign council to replace the military junta is still twelve days off.

Flag-waving Sudanese singing revolutionary songs filled the streets of Khartoum today celebrating the declaration,

The big test will be how the military reacts if anything causes that celebration to once again turn to protest

Sudan’s military junta says it thwarted coup overnight.

Twelve officers both serving and retired were arrested for trying to prevent a power-deal with civilians that the Washington post calls  remarkable opportunity to restore popular rule in the giant on the Nile.

The attempted putsch follows the Transitional  Military Council, that overthrew President Omar Al Bashir last April, agreeing to enter a power-sharing deal with civilians leading to elections in three years time.

Sudan has been suspended from the African Union until the generals hand power to a civilian administration.

There are vestiges of Bashir regime who fear the consequences of losing power.

Pressure from the AU and Western powers makes it impossible for the the junta to continue holding the reins
