Workers at a Tunisian factory have gone into self-isolation for a month turning out 50 000 protective face masks a day.

The women, who are also making surgical kits, say they miss their families but the camaraderie provides some comfort

The factory normally makes protective equipment for export.

Its entire output of masks, gloves, surgical suits and caps is now being  directed to Tunisian doctors, nurses and hospitals dealing with COVID19.

Tunisia has already had six deaths  from the 227 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The North Africa country has been in lockdown since Sunday.

Neighbouring Algeria has 409 confirmed cases of COVID 19 which has killed 26 people.

Russian-backed militia leader Khalifa Haftsr declares the decisive battle for Tripoli has begun.

He was speaking a day after Turkey’s President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan said he was ready to send troop to back Libya’s weak government.

The power dynamic in North Africa, thrown into disarray by the fall of Muammar Gadaffi eight years ago,  has taken a turn with Turkey signing a security agreement with the Libyan Government.

Ankara wants to increase its influence in the increasingly insecure Mediterranean region with a view to accessing its energy resources.

This latest move by Khalifa Haftar, who’s militia has threatened Tripoli for months, will put to the test Turkey’s will to back the promises it is making with  military muscle.

Two dozen Tunisian presidential candidates are promoting themselves in television debates that are a turning point  in the Arab world.

But there have been two empty spaces left on the television stage – one for a candidate who is in jail awaiting trial and another for a presidential hopeful who is in exile.

Tunisia is used to breaking now ground in the North African and Arab world.

The television debates give an American flavour to the race to succeed President Bejii Caid Essebsi who died in July.

They’re being covered by 11 television channels and  20 radio stations that spearheaded  the 2011 Arab Spring that began in Tunisia.

Campaigning is reaching fever pitch despite some security fears on the country’s western border with Algeria where there has been a wave of violence by terror groups.
