United Nations bodies dealing with the  EBOLA outbreak in the Congo have nothing but bad news.

The World Food Program has supplied emergency food aid to more than 86 000 people since the outbreak last August.

The World Health Organization says the tenth outbreak of EBOLA in the Democratic Republic of Congo is the second largest in history.

More than 330 people have died of the haemorrhagic disease afflicting  North Kivu and Ituri provinces and threatening to spread further.

The WHO estimates there are 200 people carrying the virus who have not been treated by medical response teams.

More worrying is the fact that many of the 580 cases have been contracted from unknown sources.

EBOLA is spreading because the outbreak is located in an active conflict zone where militia have been killing civilians for years and show no inclination to work with medical response teams.

A Fresh outbreak of Ebola fever’s been reported in conflict-torn Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The four confirmed cases of the deadly hemorrhagic disease comes days after the DRC declared in a end to the Ebola outbreak in the northeast that killed 33 people.

ends intro

Without saying exactly when, Congolese authorities say 20 people have already died from hemorrhagic fevers in and around Mangina, a densely populated town about 100 km from the Ugandan border.

A team of 12 experts from Congo’s health ministry will today arrive in the city of Beni about 30kms away.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says supplies and equipment have started moving in.

Efforts to contain the virus could be  complicated by security problems.

At least 1 000 civilians have been killed by armed groups and government soldiers around Beni since 2014, and the wider region of North Kivu holds over 1 million displaced people.

An estimated 25 people, mostly Hutus, have been hacked to death with machetes by militiamen from in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

They were reportedly beheaded by the attackers from the Nande ethnic grouping.

Local officials and activists are reporting that there has been a massacre of Hutu civilians in the village of Kyaghala in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo .

The civilians were attacked, and many beheaded, by militiamen from the Mai-Mai Mazembe.

The Mai-Mai are a so-called self-defense militia composed of members of DRC’s Nande, Hunde and Kobo communities.

They stand in opposition to rivals from the Nyaturu group, which also represents ethnic Hutus.

The attack on Saturday morning will inflame the interethnic conflict in the region.

A South African peacekeeper is among seven people killed in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in clashes sparked by President Joseph Kabila staying on after his mandate ends today.

Five rebels and policemen were killed when police confronted militia attacking a prison.

The deal clashes, probably involving Mal Mal fighters took place in Butembo, a city of about a million people in North Kivu province.

The militia attacked a prison and other installations.

Mai-Mai fighters  have staged several attacks in Butembo in recent months.

The  reasons for their return are unclear, some residents say they have heard some fighters claim they are seeking to oust Kabila.

The president’s mandate ends today.

He’s barred from a third mandate under the constitution and the opposition has accused the authorities of delaying an election in the hope of reworking the constitution to extend his tenure.

Facing a Friday deadline, Rwandan Hutu rebels have started handing themselves in to authorities in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Most are still at large, risking action by the Congolese army and United Nations peacekeepers.

Numbering 155, the rebels from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, known as the FDLR, surrendered to authorities in North Kivu.

The operation bringing them in is designed to restore calm to the eastern DRC.

The FDLR is thought to include between 1,500 and 2,000 fighters, including those suspected of having participated in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

They are opposed to Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s Tutsi government.

For years they’ve been based in the eastern DRC, where they have been accused of conscripting child soldiers and of brutal attacks against residents, including rapes and murders.
