There’s concern from foreign observers about the delay in tallying votes.

The United States and Britain have officially voiced misgivings about alleged irregularities in the counting of votes from Mozambique’s presidential and legislative polls.

The European Union observation mission to Mozambique notes the faulty handling of final result sheets and lengthy tabulation procedures among the many difficulties and adversities being encountered.

The legal deadlines  for the announcement of district and provincial results are mostly unfulfilled.

International and domestic observers had praised Mozambique’s election day as generally peaceful and orderly, despite several incidents of violence.

Provisional tallies by the national electoral commission show the ruling Frelimo party ahead with around 60 percent of the votes.

Former rebel group turned opposition Renamo is in second place with around 32 percent, while the breakaway Mozambique Democratic Movement is trailing with eight percent.

Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama says last week’s election in Mozambique is flawed but he won’t resort to violence even though he’s become a five-time loser.
The former rebel leader’s opted for dialogue with  Frelimo and says he won’t  resort to violence after early results showed him losing to the ruling party.
At a press conference following the election Afonso Dhlakama promised to negotiate  differences with Frelimo.
Yet again its extended its mandate to rule the  over the country its seized  from  Portuguese rule in 1974, putting former defence minister Filipe Nyusi at the helm.
Frelimo saw off both Dhlakama’s Frelimo and Daviz Simango of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM).
International observers called the vote generally free and peaceful.
Renamo’s undertaking is likely to please foreign donors, diplomats and investors who have been hoping the elections can bury political enmities still lingering from the civil war.

Mozambique President Arnmando Guebuza’s signed a ceasefire with a rebel leader who took up arms 20 years after ending a civil war that brought the country to its knees.

Afonso Dhlakama returned to Maputo for the first time in two years to ink the agreement.

Afonso Dlakama returned to the bush claiming he was being politically marginalised.

By attacking traffic on the main north south thoroughfare his Renamo movement struck at the heart of Mozambique’s tourism sector.

Dhalakama says he’ll contest next month’s elections when Guebuza stands down having run his constitutional course at the helm.

Former Defence Minister Felipe Nyusi’s due to succeed him.

The former rebel leader has lost every poll he’s contested these past 20 years.

Renamo could actually lose its place as the official opposition.
