The head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council accuses members of the former ruling party of engaging in counter-revolutionary activities.

General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan denied any friction between civilian and military members of the council leading Sudan’s transition to civilian rule.

Disaffected members of Sudan’s military elite pushed out of power when Omar Al Bashir was overthrown a year ago have made their lethal presence felt.

Last month Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok survived an assassination attempt when his convoy was attacked in the capital Khartoum.

General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan’s assertion that members of the National Congress Party led by Bashir are in cahoots is a further indication of the delicate and dangerous job the transitional government has to do.

The FBI is helping Sudan investigate a failed assassination bid on Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.

A number of arrests have been made since the attack on Monday. Some of them foreigners.

Abdalla Hamdok was unscathed when explosives and gunfire were launched on his convoy taking him to work in Khartoum.

It underlines the fragility of Sudan’s transition to civilian rule after last year’s fall of Omar Al Bashir.

The arrival in Sudan of FBI agents supporting  investigations into the  attack shows how relations between Washington Khartoum have warmed since Al Bashir’s departure.

Sudan under him was regarded as an international pariah for which it drew economic and military sanctions.

Sudan was on Washington’s list of terrorist supporting states for which it attracted sanctions.

ends intro

The assassination bid nearly a year after the fall of Omar Al Bashir shows the fragility of Sudan’s transformation to civilian rule.

The attackers struck Abdallah Hamdok convoy as he drove to work.

One security guard was injured.

The economist turned politician said he was unscathed.

The assassination bid would not change the path of change, he tweeted.

It will put additional pressure on the strong wave of the revolution.

Hamdok is a former deputy head of the United Nations  Economic Commission for Africa.

Inter-communal violence that’s flared up in Darfur has taken at least two dozen lives since the weekend.

The Khartoum governments suspended peace talks with rebel groups in its troubled western region and is sending more troops to West Darfur.

When separatist violence began in Darfur 15 years, the region was called the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet.

Former President Omar Al Bashir is still wanted by the International Criminal Court for genocide committed by his militia – feared Janjawiid – that is still active there.

The fresh violence shows the fragility of peace efforts, particularly in West Darfur.

Some of the victims were burned to death and there are children among the fatalities.

Sudanese authorities say they’re investigating crimes against humanity in Darfur during the regime of ousted President Omar Al Bashir.

The United Nations says 300 000 people were killed and nearly three million displaced in the crackdown that began in 2003.

The probe was announced by state prosecutor Tagelsir Al Heber.

He says Omar Al Bashir and his intelligence hear Saleh Gosh will be investigated.

He did not mention former Janjawiid commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemetti, who is part of the transitional authority now running the country.

Al Heber says some of the investigation might be outside Sudan.

This could mean handing Al Bashir to the International Criminal Court which has indicted him for genocide and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

Sudan’s military junta has closed all schools and universities following protests about the killing of five pupils during demonstrations on Monday.

No time limit has been given for the action that will further hamper installation of a power-sharing administration.

The African Union has joined in domestic and international condemnation of  the killing of six demonstrators – five them school pupils – on Monday.

The AU calls for the perpetrators swiftly to be brought to trial.

The military junta’s drastic action follows mass demonstrations joined by uniformed school pupils across Sudan following the killings.

The paramilitary rapid support unit – that perpetrated the June 3 massacre of unarmed civilians – is believed to have fired on the pupils.

Deposed President Omar Al Bashir failed to appear in court yesterday on corruption charges. His trial has been postponed for a fortnight.

Sudan’s military junta has signed a power-sharing deal with leaders of pro-democracy protestors.

Hopefully ending months of turmoil since the overthrow of President Omar Al Bashir in April, it will rotate military and civilian government for three years in the run up to democratic elections.

The power-sharing deal was inked in Khartoum after all night talks.

Originally meant to have been signed on Saturday, it was delayed by misgivings and the killing of a demonstrator by militia led by Mohamed Hemeti Dagolo.

He has described today’s  signing as a historic moment for Sudan.

The deal will leave power with the military for the first 21 months.

The generals will then hand over to the civilian umbrella body for the final 18 months of the transition.

Signing of Sudan’s power sharing deal between the military junta and pro-democracy civilian groups has been further delayed.

It is now hoped the agreement that will lead to elections three years from now will be inked tomorrow.

Before the power-sharing deal mediated by African Union and Ethiopian leaders could  be signed on Saturday, the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change asked for more time to consult with the generals who overthrew President Omar Al Bashir in April.

Before these talks could start on Sunday, the feared Rapid Support Forces , formerly known as the janjaweed,  shot dead a protestor in the south east Sinnar state.

The civilian umbrella group is now saying it will be at least Tuesday before they can move any further.

Sudan’s military junta says it thwarted coup overnight.

Twelve officers both serving and retired were arrested for trying to prevent a power-deal with civilians that the Washington post calls  remarkable opportunity to restore popular rule in the giant on the Nile.

The attempted putsch follows the Transitional  Military Council, that overthrew President Omar Al Bashir last April, agreeing to enter a power-sharing deal with civilians leading to elections in three years time.

Sudan has been suspended from the African Union until the generals hand power to a civilian administration.

There are vestiges of Bashir regime who fear the consequences of losing power.

Pressure from the AU and Western powers makes it impossible for the the junta to continue holding the reins

African editors have got the military junta and civilian protestors back around the negotiating table in Sudan.

The resumption of talks is a positive developments since the massacre of demonstrators a month ago and further killing by soldiers bringing the death toll to at least 1

The mediators from the African Union backed  by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has proposed a 15-member transitional authority for Sudan.

It would comprise seven military representatives and seven civilians with a 15th member agreed by consensus.

Neither side has indicated acceptance.

The generals have released political prisoners taken since they deposed Omar Al Bashir in April.

The talks in Khartoum are taking place after expiry of a 60 deadline imposed by the AU for the installation of a civilian-led authority.
