]]> A search and rescue operation is underway for an Egyptair plane that’s gone missing over the Mediterranean.

The Airbus A320 has 66 people on board.

Egyptair flight MS840 was on a routine flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle.

It took off at 11 o’clock last night and was last heard of at 2:45 this morning

The Airbus A is a ubiquitous shorthaul aircraft with a good safety record.

It was 15 minutes into Egyptian airspace  – about 40 nautical miles off the coastline flying at 37 000 feet  – when last contact was made.

The company announced on Twitter just after 3am that their plane had disappeared from radar.

There are no immediate details of the  nationality of the passengers.
