The Belgian dredging giant Deme signed the contract for the Suez project two months after Egypt’s president Abdel Fatah El Sisi launched it and Egyptians poured in the $8,5 billion in finance.
Deme project manager Dirk Draulans has spent the last year in the Sinai desert over4seeing the four giant cutter suction vesels and six dredger hoppers.
He says he feels he had a part in writing history and sustaining modern civilisation in the land of the pharaohs.
Deme’s area director Pierre Catteau says they’ll look for new projects in Egypt which is making a new start after years of difficulties.
