]]> Rival army units are having at each other in the Burundian capital Bujumbura after a general announced that President Pierre Nkurnziza, who’s out of the country, has been sacked.

State radio insists the attempted coup has failed.

However it’s surrounded by army units trying to get in.

Bujumbura prison has been broken open and protestors held while demonstrating against President Pierre Nkurunziza bid to get an unconsistitional third term in power have been freed.

Gunfire rings out from the street at the capital as rival military units contest for control of it.

Police, who traditionally supported the president, have disappeared from the street.

Major General Godefroid Niyombare, who was sacked by Nkurunziza in January, says he’s ousted the president and suspended parliament.

Nkurunziza’s at a regional summit in Tanzania called to discuss the crisis in Burundi.
