Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has taken the unusual step of denying rumours that he is dead.

Advisors fear he is playing into the hands of rivals seeking to capitalize on his poor  health as he prepares to fight for re-election next year.

When their president spent half of last year on sick leave in Britain, Nigerians were susceptible to suggestions that he’s died and been replaced by a body double.

Muhammadu Buhari’s advisors were unable to persuade him not to contest presidential elections next year.

They’ve obviously also failed to convince him that rumours are wisest left as rumours.

The fact that he Buhari used a high-profile appearance while attending the Climate Change summit in Poland to deny that he’s been cloned has left them shaking their heads in exasperation.

As European leaders meeting in Brussels discuss forcing EU members to accept asylum seekers, more than 900 migrants rescued off the Libyan coast has arrived in Italy.

Chairman of the EU summit Donald Tusk says mandatory quotas in ineffective and highly divisive.

The European Union is committed to reach a deal on accepting migrants by June.

Poland and neighbors Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia are refusing to accept asylum seekers.

They say they cannot accommodate  large numbers of people from different cultural and religious backgrounds.

In any event, the migrants are more keen to settle in Western European countries.

Tusk, who’s a former Polish prime minister, has his work cut out driving a deal that will ease the pressure on Italy, Spain and other Mediterranean countries inundated with migrants.

Some senior British ministers want to divert aid from what they see as wasteful projects in Africa and Asia to allies in eastern Europe in a bid to get a better Brexit deal.

The Independent’s reporting that the controversial proposal has already started a war between ministers and officials at the Department for International Development.

Downing Street officials and senior cabinet ministers believe part of the British government’s R200 billion  aid budget should be used to win support for a favourable deal from Brussels.

The proposed plan would see aid money being diverted from projects described as questionable in developing countries in Asia and Africa to Poland, Hungary and the Baltic states, which so far have been allies of the UK.

The manoeuvre is reportedly designed to persuade eastern European countries to back the demands of the UK, when negotiating its exit from the EU.
