The say volunteer nurse Willam Pooley, who was evacuated from Sierra Leone at the weekend,  is fully aware of the risks involved.

William Pooley’s doctors say he’s a remarkably resilient man who’s getting expert care in a specially adapted isolation ward in London.

They say the next few days will be critical.

More than 2 600 people in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria,  Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo have been infected since March, including more than 240 health care workers.

Infections in medical workers are due to a shortage of protective equipment and staff.

The World Health Organisation says the heavy toll on health care workers could cause the closure of health facilities.
