A crocodile has killed and eaten a Rwandan man who defied the lockdown designed to control the COVID19 pandemic.

The man is not identified but his death has been confirmed by the local mayor.

The death in the Nyabarongo River has surprised even those who know the reputation of President Paul Kagame’s government for vigorously enforcing the law.

The unidentified man was fishing in the river in defiance of the lockdown.

Mayor Alice Kayitsi of the Kamonyi region in the south of the country says the victim was one of the few people not respecting the directive.

The 40 cases of COVID 19 among Rwanda’s 12 million people is the highest in the region although no deaths have been recorded.

Civil society groups in Uganda are suing the governments of Uganda and Rwanda over the closure of their border.

They’re seeking compensation for those affected by this which they argue violates the treaty establishing the East African Community.

The case in the East African Court of Justice will take years to hear.

The civil society groups are hoping the publicity it generates now will give the governments of Uganda and Rwanda pause to the think about the effects of their diplomatic spat.

The groups say women traders at the border posts are being driving into poverty.

Since February, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has blocked goods coming into his country from Uganda and  prevented his citizens from crossing into the neighbouring country.

The government of Kigali and Kampala have exchanged accusations of interference in each others’ affairs.

Rwandan opposition figure who’s been detained for more than year for trying to oppose  Paul Kagame in presidential elections last year has been granted bail.

The prosecution opposed the release of Diane Rwigara and his mother, who is also facing charges.

Diane Rwigara was pointedly not among more than 2 000 political prisoners released by President Paul Kagame last month.

She still faces charges of forgery and inciting insurrection.

Authorities charge that signatures she presented in her application to be a candidate in the 2017 presidential poll were fake.

Kagame, who has been in power since the year 2000, won 98,7% of the votes in that election.

He sends agents to kill political opponents at home and abroad – including South Africa.

A 2015 referendum approved constitutional changes that will enable him to stay in power until 2034.
