Authorities in Kigali are livid at her making contact with a former ally of President Paul Kagame who is in exile in South Africa.

Foreign Minister Lindiwe Sisulu told reporters last month that as part of efforts to normalize relations with Rwanda, she’d had talks with Faustin Kayumba, a former Rwandan general sheltering in South Africa.

Angrily responding to this, an official Rwandan website called her a prostitute.

Rwanda’s ambassador to South Africa was summoned to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and left in doubt about his host’s displeasure at this insulting language.

South Africa’s ambassador to Rwanda George Twala has been recalled for consultations – another strong signal of official vexation.
