Massive demonstrations are expected today as people leave mosques on the Muslim sabbath.

Opponents of the wheelchair-bound 82-year-old Abdelaziz Bouteflika running for another term in office in next month’s Algerian election have not been mollified by his undertaking to let go the reins after one more year in office.

They say it’s time for change and the president, who has barely appeared in publish since suffering a stroke in 2013, is standing in the way of it.

Bouteflika’s released a statement recognizing the right of citizens peacefully to express their views.

But he’s warned of the danger of protests being hijacked by provocateurs seeking to cause chaos.
