]]> Entertaining more than 300 people at its national day celebration in Pretoria today, the Swiss embassy went off the grid.
Voluntarily.
Acting ambassador Carine Corey told the guests they’d voluntarily powered down – but assured them they wouldn’t notice.
And they didn’t.

Celebrating one’s seven hundredth and twenty fourth birthday, might constitute an excuse for keeping the guests in the dark.
The Highveld winter sun kept the event bright.
A generator powered the public address system for the speeches and toasts.
Coal burners melted the runny raclette cheese scraped over onions, baby potatoes and cornichons.
The wines were kept in the shade.
And the chocolate – as ever the chocolate looked after itself.
So a sustainably delicious time was had by all.
