Political leaders have signed the deal brokered by Roman Catholic Church mediators. Both Kabila and opposition leader Etienne Tshisikedi have yet to ink it.

The New Year’s Eve agreement comes after months of deadly unrest threatening to further destabilise the vast Central African nation with a painful history of dictatorship and civil war.

The violence prevented Catholic church officials from meeting their Christmas deadline.

Some members of Kabila’s party are casting doubt on the feasibility of the electoral deadline.

Deputy Prime Minister Ramazani Shadari says the questions about the dates are highly technical. If they won’t work, there will be an evaluation. It’s why a council has been adopted to follow up on the agreement.
