]]> Madagascar’s government continues to hold former president Marc Ravalomana who slipped back onto the island earlier this month, ending five years of exile in South Africa.

They’ve thusfar shown no inclination to use his presence to further national reconciliation.

Marc Ravalomana embarrassed the regional grouping SADC and enfuriated the African Union by going home unannounced and without a passport.

He was seized by local security forces and moved to remote military base – for his own protection says President Heri Rajoanarimampianini.

It was suggested to him that the president, ousted in a 2009 coup, could be drawn into reconciliation talks along with other former presidents who’ve returned to the island state.

Rajoanarimampianini who’s election win last year is internationally recognised, ending the Madagascar’s isolation, has shown no sign of taking this advice.

]]> Madagascar authorities are holding ousted president Marc Ravalomanana -who slipped back onto the island last Sunday ending five years of exile in South Africa – on a military base.

His family were allowed to visit him for four hours yesterday – but first they had to suffer the indignity of being strip searched.

Marc Ravalomanana was seized last Monday – less than 24 hours after arriving on Madagascar without a passport.

The authorities insist they haven’t arrested him.

They say they’re holding him for his own protection because there is a very real threat to his life.

He is confined to a room at the Antsiranana military base.

His family say he’s in good spirits. However, they’re deeply concerned about his treatment.

They’re calling on President Heri Rajoanarimampianini to release him immediately and unconditionally.
