The ongoing political crisis in Lesotho comes under the regional spotlight in Pretoria tonight.

Leader of the SADC organ on politics defence and security will also consider developments in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Lesotho’s deadlocked political parties have failed to meet last Friday’s deadline for a fresh peace deal.

This has prompted President Jacob Zuma, as head of the regional troika, to call an emergency meeting of its leaders.
Zuma visited the mountain kingdom last week where political leaders promised him that they would decide
by week’s end on a date to re-open Lesotho’s parliament.

Suspension of the legislature caused an abortive coup at the end of August.

Prime Minister Thomas Thabane who fled to South Africa in fear of his life, is back in Maseru under South African police guard.

The National Union of Mineworkers says serious consideration should be given to making Lesotho part of South Africa.

The Union says there’s pressure for this from its memberscwho are citizens of the mountain kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa.

NUM general secretary Frans Baleni says there real concern about Lesotho following the attempted coup last month that sent prime minister Thomas Thabane briefly into exile in South Africa.

Thirteen years ago the  NUM resolved  that South Africa should seriously consider incorporating Lesotho.

It’s calling for fresh dialogue on this.

Baleni says Basothos must decide their future and South Africa must decide how to take the process forward.

For now, it’s important that stability returns to Lesotho and that it reverts to a democracy.

Lesotho’s prime minister Thomas Thabane’s going home today – ending a brief exile in South Africa.

Regional mediators will reinstall him in power after an apparent coup last Saturday.

Thomas Thabane fled Lesotho in fear of his life when the military surrounded his home in Maseru and attacked police headquarters.

His advisor Samonyane Ntsekele says the premier will be back in Lesotho today.

Thabane was in Pretoria yesterday where President Jacob Zuma and representatives of SADC brokered a deal to end the crisis.
The military deny their action amounts to a coup and the Lesotho Congress for Democracy, which is Thabane’s partner in a coalition government, denies trying to oust him.

As the prime minister moves to end the suspension
of parliament, SADC’s sending an observer team
to the mountain kingdom to monitor political, defence and security developments.
