]]> Somaliland’s agreed to allow the United Arab Emirates to establish a military base in its territory.

The UAE will use its access to the territory on the northern edge of the Horn of Africa to fight Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Former British colony Somaliland broke ties with Somalia after dictator Said Barre bombed them to smithereens.

No-one has recognized the Somaliland  government, although landlocked Ethiopia has agreements allowing it to use the port of Berbera.  Addis Ababa won’t be happy sharing this facility with UAE forces. Neither will neighbouring Djibouti.

Other powers might sit up and think about dealing with Somaliland now that the UAE has recognized its strategic value.

Somaliland’s president Ahmed Silanjo says the military base will help create jobs.
