The Mo Ibrahim Foundation, named for its Sudanese telecoms billionaire founder, announces that the prize committee cannot settle on an African leader worthy of the 2016 Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership.
Committee chairman, former Tanzanian President Salim Ahmed Salim says they recognize and applaud the important contributions that many African leaders have made to change their countries for the better.
But the prize is intended to highlight and celebrate truly exceptional leadership, which is uncommon by its very definition. The prize is awarded to former heads of state, who must have left office in the last three years.

Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba, who has a fortnight left at the hel, says he’s humbled at winning the Mo Ibrahim prize for an African leader who’s governed well and left office peacefully.

Phambaha’s only the fourthe leader to win the prize which is the world’s most valuable individual award in its nine years of existence.

President Hifikepunya Pohamba wins five million dollars and 200 000 dollars a year for life from the prize established by Sudanese philanthropist and telecoms billionaire Mo Ibrahim.

Pohamba’s office says the money will go to his foundation helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds pursue higher education.

Former OAU secretary general Salim Ahmed Salim, who chairs the committee that awarded the prize, says under Pohamba Namibia’s cemented its reputation as a well-governed, stable and inclusive democracy with strong media freedom and respect for human rights.
