FBI helping Sudan investigate assassination bid on Prime Minister

The FBI is helping Sudan investigate a failed assassination bid on Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.

A number of arrests have been made since the attack on Monday. Some of them foreigners.

Abdalla Hamdok was unscathed when explosives and gunfire were launched on his convoy taking him to work in Khartoum.

It underlines the fragility of Sudan’s transition to civilian rule after last year’s fall of Omar Al Bashir.

The arrival in Sudan of FBI agents supporting investigations into the attack shows how relations between Washington Khartoum have warmed since Al Bashir’s departure.

Sudan under him was regarded as an international pariah for which it drew economic and military sanctions.

Sudan was on Washington’s list of terrorist supporting states for which it attracted sanctions.

Kabila says he’ll stand again after taking a break from the DRC presidency

Congo’s rocky path to elections in 12 days time has been turned deadly by a rebel attack that killed nine people in the east of the vast Central African giant.

Uganda- based rebels killed villagers including a woman hacked to death with a machete.

The rebel attack occurred in the area of the Democratic Republic of Congo where at least 285 people have died in the worst outbreak of EBOLA the country’s seen.

The disease and the rebel action are impeding the world of health volunteers and election officials.

The European Union, which has not been permitted to accredit election observers, has renewed sanctions against ruling party candidate Emmanuel Shadary.

President Joseph Kabila has been saying Shadary will be a one-term president because after taking the mandatory break, he, Kabila, will contest the 2023 poll and add to his 18 years in power

Obama to host peacekeeping summit at UN

President Barak Obama says he’ll host a summit at the United Nations later this this year to increase international involvement in peacekeeping operations.
Speaking at the African Union before heading home at the end of a two-nation safari, Obama says South Sudanese leaders must be sanctioned if they don’t sign a ceasefire by mid August.
President Barak Obama says good governance is the best way of beating terrorism and insurrection.
He runs through the list of African trouble spots, Somalia, Darfur, Central African Republic, Mali and South Sudan.
Africa’s newest country gets his particular attention.
He and regional leaders agreed that if President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar don’t reach and agreement within weeks the international community must raise the costs of intransigence – that’s diplomatic shorthand for apply sanctions.

SA Iran talking about resuming oil sales

South Africa’s planning to resume oil supplies from Iran – possibly within three months.

Deputy foreign ministers of the two countries spoke about this in Pretoria today.

Iran was once South Africa’s largest supplier of crude – providing about a quarter of the country’s needs.

The taps were turned off two years ago by Western sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Nomaindiya Mfeketo and her Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian spoke today about opening them up again.

Sanctions blocked more than $100 billion of oil revenue Iran was holding abroad.

They also prevented Iran from exporting to some countries.

But it’s bumped up oil sales to China, India, Japan and South Korea.
