All South Africans safe in Nepal after earthquake

All South Africans caught up in the Nepalese earthquake that killed more than 3 200 people have been accounted for.
Most are trying to get home quickly.
This isn’t possible for climber Saray Khumalo trapped but safe on Mount Everest. She’s unable to descend after avalanches destroyed equipment and a safe path.

It is not clear whether Errol Goodman and six members of the Johannesburg Hiking Club were able to get on a flight out of Nepal overnight.
They were among people sheltering outside. Severe aftershocks prevented their going into buildings.
Eighteen girls from St Mary’s DSG in Pretoria are preparing to be brought home by the rescue group Gift of the Givers who are hoping to get in tomorrow with a planeload of medical and rescue equipment and personnel.

SA climber safe after earthquake, but trapped on Everest

South African climber Saray Khumalo and her party are trapped in camp two on Mount Everest after yesterday’s earthquake that killed more than 2000 people in Nepal.

Khumalo cannot get off the mountain where an avalanche killed 17 climbers and Sherpas.

A severe weather system is moving in, making things more difficult.

Saray Khumalo is one of two South Africans attempting to become the first African woman to summit Mount Everest.

The other is Katlego Letheo who’s tackling Everest from the Tibet side.

There’s no indication she’s been affected by the earthquake and the avalanches it caused.

Saray’s told supporters via smartphone that she’s safe but the route down has been too damaged to attempt a descent.

She has limited supplies.

Last year her climbing efforts were scrapped by an avalanche that killed 16 Sherpas and closed Everest.

South Africans in Nepal reportedly safe after deadly earthquake

South Africans caught up in Nepal’s worst earthquake in 80 years appear to be safe as the death toll approaches 2 000.

They include eleven schoolgirls from Pretoria and a climbing party with Saray Khumalo making another bid to become the first black South African woman to summit Mount Everest.

Direct contact with the South Africans has been impossible.

Facebook entries say the schoolgirls from St Mary’s in Pretoria are all accounted for a safe as is the climbing party with Saray Khumalo.

She was caught up in the avalanche last year that killed Sherpa guides and closed the mountain to climbers.

Nepal has reeling from the effects of the quake that has flattened parts of Katmandu and created a number of deadly of deadly avalanches on Everest and other mountains.
