The death toll from the worst Ebola outbreak the world has seen has topped 8000.

This from the World Health Organisation that says Sierra Leone had the biggest increase in fatalities since last week.

The World Health Organisation says the 8 153 Ebola deaths were among 20 656 known cases of the hemorrhagic fever in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

This represents a mortality rate of 39 percent.

The WHO says 2 915 deaths have been reported from Sierra Leone, 3 471 from Liberia and 1 767 from Guinea where this outbreak began in December 2013

Sierra Leone had the largest rise in fatalities since the previous figures were issued on January 2, recording 88 deaths.

The United States has decided to drop extra Ebola screening for travelers coming to the country from Mali.

Visitors from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone remain subject to travel restrictions and monitoring.
