]]> The United Nations High Commission For Refugees has raised the alarm for 85 migrants lost at sea between Libya and Italy.

The European border guard Frontex is flying over the Mediterranean this morning in search of the dinghy carrying the migrants..

At the weekend, two German boats monitoring those in peril on the sea spotted four craft off the southern coast of Malta.

They had set out from Libya, bound for Italy.

One of them has since arrived at its destination another two are still at sea.

The court dinghy is unaccounted for. 

UNHCR spokesperson Carlotta Sami says they fear the missing boat has capsized.

In addition to Frontex, the European Coast Guard and a German Sea Watch vessel are engaged in the search.

]]> A combination of escalating conflict in Libya and a more accommodating attitude by Italy’s leftist coalition is sending thousands of migrants across the Mediterranean.

NGO’s monitoring this traffic say 22 boats carrying 1500 people cast off from Libya this week.

The tough, anti-migrant line of right-winger Matteo Salvini is thing of the past in Italy.

The migrants housed in appalling  conditions in Libya – anywhere between half a million and  800 000 of them – are taking advantage of this.

NGO organisations Sea Watch and Open Arms say this week they’ve rescued 237 people from the unseaworthy boats that people traffickers pack the desperate migrants into.

This year, at least 1000 people intercepted at sea have been returned to Libya – against the express wishes of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
