The call from Algiers is in response to the decision by African leaders at the extraordinary summit on November 18 for the continent’s regional groups to play a more significant role.

By summoning a meeting of Maghreb foreign ministers, Algeria is calling Morocco’s bluff. 

Hoping to avoid the meeting demanded by the United Nations with the Western Sahara leadership next month, Morocco suggested talks with Algeria.

Algeria is effectively saying Morocco has to square things by keeping it promise to hold a self-determination referendum in occupied Western Sahara.

Meanwhile the Maghreb Arab Union should take up matters important to the whole northwest African region.
