The world’s largest wildlife conservation meeting has rejected the process for establishing future ivory trade

However the battle at the conference of the parties to the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of fauna and flora will continue later this week with Namibia and Zimbabwe wanting to revive the trade in ivory so they can sell their stockpiles of tusks.

For the last nine years, CITES parties have been negotiating a decision-making mechanism, which would establish a process for a future trade in ivory.

Yesterday they voted end the long-running discussion.

It was a setback for the host South Africa that wanted the process to continue.

However, it has delighted conservationists who saying continued talking has helped the poaching  of a quarter of Africa’s elephant heard this past decade.
