Human Rights Watch says a paramilitary unit controlled by former Gambian president Yahya Jammeh was behind the killings of more than 50 West African migrants in 2005.

The  watchdog group is involved in joint investigation with  TRIAL International that involved interviewing 30 former Gambian officials, including 11 officers, and a survivor of the round-up as part of a joint investigation.

Human Right Watch and the Swiss-based group fighting impunity say 44 Ghanaians and several Nigerians, Senegalese, as well as a Togolese  were arrested on a beach in Gambia while trying to reach Europe.

They were suspected of being mercenaries wanting to overthrow thenPresident Yahya  Jammeh.

The NGOs, say in a joint statement the migrants were handed over to a paramilitary unit, and executed on Jammeh’s orders.

Security for PAP members and officials is being increased following a series of attacks – the latest of which left a Senegalese MP in hospital with a bullet wound in her thigh.

In October, the next time Pan African Parliament members discuss their security, they’ll be in a special session at the Egyptian resort of Sharm El Sheikh.

Last week, when they had a committee debate at their Midrand headquarters, many angrily accused the South African hosts of not providing enough protection.

South Africans officials say this is being urgently attended to.

The MPs will able to go about their business safely when they arrive for the next plenary session next year
