Somalia’s ambassador to Egypt says more than 400 refugees have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea after their boats capsized on the way to Europe.

Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella says several hundred people appear to have died.

Reports say the refugees were fleeing to Italy from Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea in four boats ill-equipped for the journey.

Médecins Sans Frontières tweeted that in 2016, the Mediterranean is a mass grave.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella says Europe needs to reflect in the face of yet another tragedy in the Mediterranean in which, it seems, several hundred people have died.

Earlier this morning, the Italian coastguard said108 refugees had been saved and six bodies recovered from a semi-submerged rubber dinghy on Sunday.

Separately, 33 refugees were rescued overnight off eastern coast of Sicily.

Almost a year ago a crowded fishing boat sank in the Mediterranean, with around 800 refugees trapped inside.
