A woman who was with a group of looters at a township west of Johannesburg was shot dead yesterday (Friday).

No arrested have been made with regards this incident. Police are waiting for the woman’s family to identify her.

Two people have  been killed in Soweto as residents attacked and looted foreign-owned businesses.

The giant township neighboring Johannesburg has been at the centre of xenophobic violence in 2008, 2015 and 2017.

The attacks on the shops are believed to have been sparked by a Johannesburg newspaper reporting that foreign businesses are selling fake and expired goods to local consumers.

The first death occurred after a Somali shopowner owner fired a pistol in self defence.

A police spokesperson said one person has been arrested for murder and another for attempted murder.

Officials have  appealed for calm and warned people to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

The police spokesman confirmed the targets of looting were foreign-owned businesses.

The ANC government, with its history of having  neighbors offer shelter and support to South African refugees during the struggle against apartheid, is particularly embarrassed by outbreaks of xenophobia.

The worst of these was in 2008 when 62 people died and special camps had to be erected to shelter  foreigners outside Johannesburg.

In 2015 at least seven people died  when gangs hunted down foreigners in Johannesburg and the east coast port city of Durban.

Two worshippers and their knife-wielding attacker have been killed in a Mosque in South Africa Western Province early yesterday (Thursday).
Several other people sustained stab wounds before police shot and killed their assailant.
This attack at the Malmesbury Mosque comes at the end of the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan. In South Africa, Ramadan started with a worshipper being killed by having his throat slit at a Durban Mosque 1600 kms away.
Two other people were seriously injured in that attack.
Spokesman for the serious crimes investigation unit known as the Hawks Simphiwe Mhlongo says they’re treating that incident as a national security priority.
The Muslim Judicial Council says its deeply concerned that no arrests have been made and police appear to be no closer to finding the culprit.
The Shi’s Mosque was set alight after the attack and a bomb was found in the building three days later.
Western Cape Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut says  Malmesbury police were called out to the Mosque in the early hours of the morning and found two people stabbed to death and several injured.
As happened in Durban, the attacker prayed with the people before turning on them were them.
Fellow worshippers in Malmesbury say their attacker was a Somali as was one of his victims.
Police approached him as he walked out of the Mosque after attempting to behead one of his victims who was an old man.
They shot and killed him when he refused to lay down his knife.

The Ethiopian government says hundreds of people have died in ethnic clashes in the eastern part of that country.

The fighting between members of the two largest groups in the country has displaced more than 50 000 people.

Information Minister Negeri Lencho says the exact death toll in more than a week of fighting between Oromo and Somali groups has not been ascertained.

The Federal government have since taken over security in the restive region and ordered a probe into rights abuses that may have occurred.

Addis Ababa has also moved to help ease the humanitarian crisis arising from the displacement.
