Three more African countries has recorded confirmed cases of COVID 19.

These include Burundi where authorities admitted last week there were no cases recorded simply because they had not been testing.

Scientists assume that the five African countries that have not acknowledged cases of COVID 19 are doing this because, like Burundi, they have not been testing for it.

Somaliland and Sierra Leone have registered their first cases.

This morning there have been 6 383 cases of COVID 19 confirmed in Africa. 5 642 of these are still active.

505 of these patients are described  as recovered and 236 have died.

South Africa has the highest figures of the continent with five deaths from the 1325 active cases.

Ethiopia’s apologised to Somalia for wiping the country off a map posted on its official website.

Addis Ababa says it does not know how the offending chart got there and has replaced it with the logo of the department of foreign affairs.

The map shows Somalia as part of Ethiopia, but accurately outlines the breakaway Somaliland which is not internationally recognized.

At first sight, it might hark back to the bloody history between Ethiopia and Somalia.

They’ve been fighting border wars since 1964.

International forces were involved in the Ogaden war between 1977 and 1978.

But the Ethiopian cartographer has left his diplomatic compatriots more to apologise for.

The offending map shows the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo as one country.

And it does not separate  Sudan and South Sudan.

The United Nations has appealed for $80-million to help pay for the damage caused by a tropical cyclone in the Horn of Africa.

At least 18 people have been killed by the storm and 40 fishermen in the Gulf of Aden remain unaccounted for.

Even as residents of Somaliland and Puntland count the cost of tropical cyclone Sagar they are watching a new storm  building in the Gulf of Aden that’s likely to hit them this week.

Schools and community centers have been flooded.

Roads remain impassable.

Key infrastructure, including the central electrical compound in Djibouti City, remains under water.

Damage from the storm, which has affected at least 30 000 people, includes  the risk of environmental pollution.

Tropical cyclone Sagas, that stopped fighting between troops of two breakaway states in the Horn of Africa, has killed at least 18 people and left 40 fishermen unaccounted for.

The storm has displaced nearly 12 000 people and destroyed dozens of homes.

The cyclone formed in the Gulf of Aden and made landfall in Somaliland and Puntland, where last week troops were involved in deadly clashes.

Norwegian Refugee Council regional director Nigel Tricks says its the worst storm to hit the region in years.

Sixteen people are known to have died in Somaliland where poor roads and communications prevent the authorities from getting full details.

Two people had died in Puntland.

The 40 fisherman unaccounted for were at sea when the storm struck.
