]]> South Africans caught up in Nepal’s worst earthquake in 80 years appear to be safe as the death toll approaches 2 000.

They include eleven schoolgirls from Pretoria and a climbing party with Saray Khumalo making another bid to become the first black South African woman to summit Mount Everest.

Direct contact with the South Africans has been impossible.

Facebook entries say the schoolgirls from St Mary’s in Pretoria are all accounted for a safe as is the climbing party with Saray Khumalo.

She was caught up in the avalanche last year that killed Sherpa guides and closed the mountain to climbers.

Nepal has reeling from the effects of the quake that has flattened parts of Katmandu and created a number of deadly of deadly avalanches on Everest and other mountains.
