The first class of 38 officers will be awarded with post graduate degrees certified by Stellenbosch University.

At a parade marking the start of the Security and Defence Studies Programme, the SANDF chief of human resources Lieutenant General Norman Yengeni says by 2020 every officer in the force will have a tertiary qualification.

The higher level, international recognised degrees that will be conferred on the graduates are a result of last year’s Defence Review enhancing education, training and development of officers.

Commandant of the National Defence College, Brigadier General Gordon Yekelo says the first class will have only South Africans.

But from next year, foreign officers will make up a third of the number.
