The Mo Ibrahim Foundation says it’s about to publish its first African Governance Report.

It is designed to build a prosperous and united Africa based in shared principles and common destiny.

The Sudanese telecoms billionaire Mo Ibrahim is best known for his annual leadership award to retired African presidents.

Sometimes the prize is not dished out because his foundation cannot find a deserving recipient.

The African Governance Award, to be published online on October  15, will draw on the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, which is also published annually.

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation says the new report will judge implementation of the African Union Agenda 2063 and UN 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

It calls it a vision and action plan to all segments of African Society.

The eleventh Mo Ibrahim Index of African Governance shows countries on the continent have made virtually no progress creating sustainable economic opportunities its for their citizens.

South Africa has slipped down one place on the index of all 54 African countries to seven position.

ends intro

The index set up by Sudanese telecoms billionaire Mo Ibrahim makes depressing reading this year – particularly the measure of sustainable economic opportunity.

It shows a paltry two percent growth since 2008, even though some countries have  managed GDP growth of 40 percent in the same period.

Four of the ten countries with the highest GDP are below the African average score for sustainable economic growth.

It also show that progress in governance lags behind demographic growth and youth expectations.

Ibrahim himself says the lost opportunity of the past decade is deeply concerning.

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation, named for its Sudanese telecoms billionaire founder, announces that the prize committee cannot settle on an African leader worthy of the 2016 Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership.
Committee chairman, former Tanzanian President Salim Ahmed Salim says they recognize and applaud the important contributions that many African leaders have made to change their countries for the better.
But the prize is intended to highlight and celebrate truly exceptional leadership, which is uncommon by its very definition. The prize is awarded to former heads of state, who must have left office in the last three years.
