The United Nations is urging President Joseph Kabila to hold elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo before the deadline at the end of the year.

Kabila will come under the spotlight at the SADC summit in Pretoria next month. However, it’s doubtful his neighbors will go so far as to echo the UN call.

ends intro

Joseph Kabila’s constitutional mandate as president ran out last November.

He can’t stand again, but he can stay in power until elections are organized.

There have been deadly protests in the DRC calling on him to hurry up.

The UN believes there’s a danger of serious disorder if elections are not held this year.

Asked if SADC leaders would hold Kabila’s foot to the fire, a South African official briefing reporters ahead of their summit says only that the presidents will be briefed on security in the DRC.

What they decide to do after that is up to them.

Six years into his presidency the man dubbed America’s first African president has promised to step up military support for fighting Islamist militants and keeping peace on the continent of his father’s birth.

President Barak Obama told the four dozen presidents gathered in Washington that boosting Africa’s security will help shore up its economic achievements.

Having earlier announced thirty three billion dollars in US investments and financial support for Africa, President Barak Obama says the continent needs to redouble reform efforts to deepen growth and opportunity.
Obama urges African leaders to slash corruption, improve human rights, especially the rights of women, and strengthen the rule of law.
He says a new, more prosperous Africa is emerging but growth depends, first and foremost, on continued reforms in Africa by Africans.
