Discovery of a medieval African coin on an Australian beach could rewrite that continent country’s history.

The copper coin from the Kilwa Sultanate pre- dates by 800 years the European discovery of Australia.

Archaeologist Mike Hermes says the discovery of the Kilwa coin draws into question who exactly discovered Australia.

Finding how it made the 10 000 km journey  to Northern Australia could turn on its head what we know about global trade.

The Kilwa Sultinate spread from the Horn of Africa down to Mozambique along what is known as the Swahili Coast.

Historian Mike Owen says the coin is the Holy Grail for the Past Masters who’ve been scouring the coastline for rock art, stone tools, shipwrecks and human remains looking for evidence of Australia’s past.

Kenya’s beefing up security along its border with Somalia after an increase in the number of cross-frontier attacks by the terrorist movement Al Shabaab.

The country’s security forces are already at full stretch ensuring an orderly election on August 8.

Being popular with tourists, Lamu and other islands  along Kenya’s  Swahili Coast need special protection from the Al Shabaab terrorists operating there.

Their attacks are  aimed at stopping Kenyan authorities helping the Somali government in its anti-terror operations.

They also earn the publicity-hungry  militants airtime and frontpage attention.

The residents of the this region live in fear of the terrorists, but they also want to use this campaign to address their lack of trust in the government and its treatment of Muslims.
