It was coming down the steep hill from Songo, near the Cahora Bassa Dam in the Tete Province.

On the first seven sharp curves it came off the road, throwing the passengers down the hillside.

This is the second delay rally involving Nyusi.

The injured had to be taken 90 kms to hospital.

The disaster occurred in Tete province about 2 000kms from the capital Maputo.

A government team is traveling there to investigate the incident.

They’ll be checking whether the fuel was being sold from the truck or whether it had been ambushed by local residents.

Mozambique is one of the world’s poorest nations.

The government recently increased the price of fuel, after the value of the local currency – named metical – sunk against the dollar.

Three ministers are en route to the scene of the accident 2 000 kms from the capital Maputo.

The ill-fated fuel truck overturned on Wednesday, say Mozambique officials.

They’re trying to ascertain whether the driver was selling petrol to locals, or whether he had in fact been ambushed by them.

They say they’re taking seriously the possibility that the explosion might have been caused by a lighting strike.

In addition to the 73 dead, 100 people   were wounded and had to be moved 90 kms to hospital.

There’s no indication when the investigators will make their findings known.
