]]> The conference of the parties to the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of flora and fauna is being asked to put a number of sharks on their protected list.

Thresher sharks in the Pacific is one of them, the world’s largest wildlife conservation conference now underway in Sandton hears.

They’re being killed not for their meat but merely for their fins.

Dive instructor Arthur Sokimi is a member of Fiji’s delegation, which is one of 182 countries accredited to CITES.

He says the  loss of sharks is affective the very survival of people .

Philippine Anna Oposa likens CITES  to Noah’s ark

Skim says he cannot identify the fishermen driving the sharks to extinction – but he is certain they are not locals.
