Liberia has released what it hopes is its last Ebola patient. She’s a 58-year old English teacher hospitalised a fortnight ago.

The count is now on. If there are no new infections in 45 day, Liberia can declare itself Ebola free.

Beatrice Yardolo left the Chinese-run Ebola treatment centre in the Paynesville district of Monrovia today.

On her way home, she described herself as one of the happiest persons on earth today.

The head of the Incidence Management System, Tolbert Nyenswah, says there are no other confirmed cases of Ebola in the country.

He says now the last patient is released, Liberia can begin to count up to 45 days to be declared Ebola free in keeping with World Health Organisation protocols and standards.

The statement from Monrovia confirms tentative announcements by experts worldwide of an apparent slowdown in the epidemic.

Liberian assistant health minister Tolbert Nyenswah says new cases have dropped from a daily peak of more than 500 to around 50.

He says it’s not the number of Ebola cases being reported two months ago… The numbers of cases are reducing.

But he adds a cautionary note that there were still new cases emerging across the country.

The largest Ebola outbreak on record has killed some 5,000 people, with Liberia hit hardest and the contagion still raging in neighbouring Sierra Leone and Guinea.

There’s good news in the United States too, where New York doctor Craig Spencer who became America’s last known Ebola case after caring for patients in Guinea, has been cured.
