Japan’s Defence Minister’s resigning over concealing details of her forces peacekeeping efforts in South Sudan.

She failed to disclose details that would have prevented Japanese troops from operating in Africa’s troubled youngest country.

Japan’s post-Second-World-War constitution precludes its troops from participating in peacekeeping  operations unless there is a ceasefire in place.

This is clearly not the case in South Sudan.

However Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is seeking to expand his country’s peacekeeping efforts.

His protege Tomomi Inada, whom he made Defence Minister a year ago,  said logs detailing the danger Japanese troops faced in South Sudan had been discarded.

Exposure of the  cover-up  reflects the plummeting popularity of Abe.

Inada’s departure comes at a time of growing tension with North Korea moving towards becoming a nuclear power.
