United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is visiting the African countries worst hit by the Ebola outbreak.

He’s showing his support for the fight against the disease that’s killed nearly 7 000 people and he’ll press for continued international response until the epidemic ends.

First stop for UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is Accra where the emergency UN mission on Ebola is based.

World Health Organization chief Margaret Chan, the Secretary General’s special envoy on Ebola David Nabarro and the head of the UN mission on Ebola Tony Banbury are joining him as he heads for Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

Ban’s avoided visiting these West African nations for fear of disrupting response efforts.

But now he wants to see for himself the progress being reported by the world organisation in controlling the disease and allocating resources to the afflicted nations.

The United Nations Ebola Czar says the world organisation doesn’t yet have the resources necessary to defeat the disease

Tony Banbury says significant contributions from Britain, China, Cuba and the United States aren’t enough.

Tony Banbury says it’s difficult to say if the spread of Ebola is slowing because it’s a very mixed picture.

There’s a decline in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, but significant acceleration elsewhere.

Even though the death toll from Ebola is marginally down on newly collated figures, transmission in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea remains persistent and widespread, particularly in the capital cities.

Banbury remains hopeful of reaching the target of 70% bed space for new cases and 70% safe burials by December.

West African heads of state are meeting in Ghana today to review the regional response to the crisis.
