Cilliers say this could affect his expectation that Cyril Ramaphosa will become the new ANC leader and South Africa’s new president.

Speaking at the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, Jakkie Cilliers says Russia’s determination to sell a trillion rand nuclear power plant to South Africa gives it a considerable stake in the ANC leadership contest.

He says South Africa cannot afford a nuclear power plant now and does not need one until 2040.

Nevertheless President Jacob Zuma is determined to buy one now.

“The question is why? Has money changed hands? Is this a pay back for BRICKS membership? A sort of membership fee?” asks Cilliers

He says Russia has interfered in the vote on Brexit, in European elections and in the Trump election.
