Home to the largest elephant population on the continent, Botswana’s  split with its regional neighbors on how best to protect these endangered animals.

The country’s environment minister says Botswana’s feels alone in its successful effort to conserve elephants and would like the help of its neighbors.

Botswana’s environment minister Tshekedi Khama joined the majority of continental counterparts in Sandton today trying to get the conference of parties to the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species to increase protection for all African elephants.

He says Botswana feels let down by its neighbours.

“We feel alone. We would like some help from our neighbors,” says Khama

He says Botswana will continue its ban on elephant  hunting  and will unilaterally impose the strict protective conditions on the animals contained in CITES appendix one.

Botswana’s Appeal Court’s frustrated President Ian Khama’s bid to appoint his brother as vice-president.

The Gaborone government says it accepts the court’s decision and will implement it.

Having been re-elected president last month, Ian Khama wanted MPs to elect his deputy by show of hands.

This was to obviate dissident lawmakers voting against Khama’s choice.

Botswana’s Appeal court’s upheld a High Court judgment ordering a secret ballot constitutional.
Khama’s facing a backlash from within his own Botswana Democratic Party over the prospect of
Tshekedi Khama being vice president.

Some parliamentarians accuse the president of trying to create a dynasty in one of Africa’s most democratic
nations.

They say he’s undermining the role of parliament by trying to decide on his deputy by a show of hands.
