The Italian coastguard yesterday launched 40 rescue operations, plucking 6 500 migrants from the Mediterranean off the Libyan Coast.

Most of those now being processed in Sicily are from Eritrea and Somalia.

ends intro

A day before yesterday’s rescue operation, which is the biggest in years, the Italian coastguard rescued

1 100 migrants in the same area.

Desperate to find a better life in Europe, Africans are pouring through Libya taking advantage of the warmer late-summer sea.

It is not known how many die in the desert before getting to the coast.

At least 3 000 have drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean.

115 000 people have landed in Italy this year.

That’s twice as many as in the same period last year.
