]]> The United Nations High Commission For Refugees has started biometric testing of refugees in Uganda following reports that the number is being widely inflated to steal aid.

The UNHCR is taking the step to avoid a freeze on funding from donor nations.

Uganda earned kudos for taking in 1,4 million refugees – mainly from South Sudan – in 2016.

It’s emerged that this figure has been exaggerated.

Uganda’s Commissioner For Refugees Apollo Kazungu has been suspended.

The UNHCR welcomes the Ugandan authorities investigating the scandal.

The commission senior regional spokesman in Uganda Teresa Ongaro told journalists in Kampala that biometric verification has been introduced because donors need assurance that these matters have been dealt with. If they don’t receive those assurances, they may withhold funding.
