SA relaxes childrens’ travel requirements

With immediate effect, South African authorities have relaxed some the requirement for children travelling into and out of the country.

Enforcing strict provisions the department said was aimed at curbing child trafficking has cost the country billions in lost tourist revenue.

The statement from Home Affairs today says foreign children from countries requiring visas or with passports giving particulars of parents will not have to supply documentation like unabridged birth certificates.

Travelers are urged nevertheless to carry the documents which may be required in certain circumstances for example children from countries exempt from visa requirements in South Africa.

South African children traveling abroad will not need documentation if their parents are listed in their passports.

To meet requirements of the Children Act, the permission of both parents is required for a child leaving the country, so an affidavit must be produced from a parent not accompany that child.

Home Affairs Director General Mkuseli Apleni rejects travel industry complaints that new regulations governing the entry to South Africa of people travelling with children are a blunt instrument that will hurt the tourism industry.
He says South Africa is by no means unique in applying the regulations that come into force on Monday.

Director General Mkuseli Apleni says the backlog of 4000 applications for unabridged birth certificates for juvenile travellers has been whittled down to 800.
He released telephone numbers for people to call if they’re still waiting for documents.
The certificates are required for children travelling with only one parent or another person from visa exempt countries.
He says the requirement is benchmarked on countries attracting far more tourists that South Africa.
He doesn’t accept that their application with hurt tourism or the South African economy.
