United Nations report says large-scale intra African migration lifts the continent’s economy and has benefits to both source and destination countries.

Secretary General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development Mukhisa Kituyi, says remittances – the money migrants send home to their families –  make up more than half of the capital flows in Africa.

Migrants make up half of the GDP of Ivory Coast and 13% of Rwanda’s which  actively seeks skilled workers.

The report’s main author Junior Roy Davis says there’s an intimate correlation between migration and trade.

Migration has a bad image because of the burden to recipient countries posed by Africa having the largest number of people forced out of their countries by conflict and natural disasters.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development says investment into Africa may stage a rebound this year.

This would run against the global downward trend caused largely by low prices in the oil and gas sector.

UNCTAD’s bleak prediction of a 10 to 15 percent drop in foreign direct investment around the world makes an exception of Africa where  it may  increase by 6 percent to $60 billion.

The UN agency says this bounce-back is already becoming visible in announced greenfield projects in Africa. In the first quarter of 2016, their value was $29 billion,  which 25 percent higher than the same period last year.

Egypt and Morocco are seeing the biggest rise in prospective investment.

UNCTAD says the positive trend prevails more widely.
