A United Nations study shows most of the African migrants who entered Europe via irregular routes were employed or in school when they set out.

The study entitled Scaling Fences says more than 90% of respondents would risk their lives again to make the journey.

The United Nations Development Programme study polled 1970 migrants from 39 African nations now re-housed in 13 European countries.

58% were either in jobs or in school when they put themselves in the hands of people smugglers.

Most of them were in jobs with competitive wages.

They felt pushed to leave because they thought they were not providing enough for their families and they did not believe their governments were doing enough to meet their aspirations.
