]]> President Jacob Zuma says Hutu rebels hiding out in the Democratic Republic of Congo are not meeting an ultimatum to surrender.

So, regional leaders will meet in Angola next week to decide on what steps to take.

Speaking as chairman of SADC’s defence arm, President Jacob Zuma says only 337 rebels from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda known as the FDLR turned themselves in by last Friday.

That means less than a quarter have complied with the January 2 deadline set by regional leaders.
Zuma says SADC leaders will meet in Angola on January 15 and 16 to decide on how to respond.

He adds the regional body’s ready to play its fullest
part.
Fourteen months ago the Congolese army backed by UN soldiers from South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi forced the surrender of M23, another rebel group in the area.

]]> Angry youths have gone on the rampage after at least 30 people died in a boating accident in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The rioters set fire to government buildings near the provincial capital of Kisangani.

Congolese officials say there were 105 survivors from the boat accident.

They pulled up the bodies of at least 30 people.

Details of the sinking on Monday have taken days to reach the capital Kinshasa.

It’s understood the overcrowded boat struck a rock and upended on the Congo River.

The boat did not have a passenger manifest so it may never be known exactly how many people died.

Witnesses say they believed more than 200 people were aboard along with tons of merchandise.

The accident comes less than two weeks after a boat sank on Lake Tanganyika in Katanga province that left at least 130 dead.
