]]> Hamas’s most senior representative in Lebanon has likened Boko Haram and Islamic State to the Islamist radicals that set themselves apart in the seventh century and began killing fellow Muslims.

Usamah Hamdan was speaking at a three-day conference on political Islam organised by the Afro-Middle East Centre in Pretoria.

As a member of the Hamas politburo and its former head of international relations, Usamah Hamdan is one of the most senior members of Palestine’s ruling organisation to visit South Africa.

His keynote speech at the Political Islam conference that opened in Pretoria last night spoke of disruptive elements known as kwarijites that have dogged the religion from its very start.

He says Boko Haram and Islamic State are modern versions of these.

Nevertheless Islam is moving forward

Hamdan says the emphasis has to be on building something for the benefit of society.
