Leaders of the Great Lakes region say fears of increased violence because of delayed in elections in Democratic Republic of Congo mean the UN peacekeeping force in that strife-torn country must be beefed up.

They say the troops must come from the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region and the Southern African Development Community.

Two days of talks in Luanda, at which South Africa’s Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana Mashebane was present, ended with a statement that the goal is to strengthen the operations of the UN force MONUSCO in fighting the negative forces in the DRC.

11 countries participated in the talks.

MONUSCO currently has more than 20,000 troops in the DRC protecting civilians and disarming dozens of rebel and splinter groups after two decades of conflict in the east of the country.

The Bongo family’s  extend its 50-year rule over Gabon after the country’s constitutional court ruled Ali Bongo was the rightful winner of last month’s contested election.

His chief opponent and former ally Jean Ping, the one-time African Union commission head, persists in saying the result was rigged.

The constitutional court says it retallied all the votes from the poll. However it couldn’t do a full recount because all the ballots  were burned immediately after they were counted at the polling stations.

It’s changed some of the results, but declared Bongo still has the lead.

The streets of Libreville have been quiet since the court decision.

At least seven people died and more than 1,000 were arrested in violent protests following the initial announcement of the election result earlier this month.

Counting is underway in the fifth election Zambia has had this past decade.

The results from this closely fought race are expected tomorrow

ends intro

Both the incumbent Edgar Lungu and his challenger Hakainde Hichilema have expressed confidence about the outcome of the elections which saw a good turnout in a calm, peaceful environment.

28 000 votes separated them when they competed for the top job last year after the death of President Michael Sata.

Lungu’s Patriotic Front was hit by splits and defections to Hichilema’s United Party for National Development ahead of the vote.

About 6.7 million people were registered to vote. Violence marred the campaign so there’s concern about the loser accepting the result.

The winner will need 50 percent plus one to avoid a run off
