Sudan’s transitional government says ousted President Omar Al Bashir must face prosecution by the International Criminal Court.

Al Bashir, currently serving a sentence in Sudan for corruption, is wanted by the court in The Hague for genocide and crimes against humanity.

During peace talks in Darfur, the Khartoum government said anyone wanted by the ICC would have to face the international tribunal.

Chief among these is Omar Al Bashir, indicted for his part in the deaths of more than 300 000 and displacement of two-and-a-half million in the Darfur conflict that began in 2003 and became the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet.

Al Bashir also faces charges in Sudan for the deaths of protestors leading up to his being deposed last April.

The Saudi-Arabian-owned Al Arabiya television network quotes the Sudan Army as having announced the formation of a transitional government following the resignation of President Omar Al Bashir.

The Sudanese Professional Association, which has organized months of mass protests calling for Al Bashir’s fall has distanced itself from this say, saying it will only accept a civilian transitional administration.

The Sudanese Army’s named Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf as head of the transitional council.

There’s no word of the whereabouts of President Omar Al Bashir.

Security authorities will be at pains to keep him out of the clutches of the International Criminal Court where he has been indicted for war crimes in Darfur.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt have both offered him asylum.

Good governance guru Mo Ibrahim says the International Criminal Court should drop war crimes charges against Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir if he agrees to stand down.

Three weeks of bloody protests  calling for Al Bashir’s departure have left more than 40 people dead.

Sudanese telecoms billionaire Mo Ibrahim awards an annual prize of $5-million for good governance to a former African leader.

He says he hates impunity.

But  there is a case for lifting the ICC indictment on Omar Al Bashir – conditional on his stepping down – if it will save lives and spare Sudan a bloody civil war.

The ICC charge, dating back to 2009, alleges Al Bashir engaged in crimes against humanity in putting down  a separatist rebellion in Darfur

Lawyers for the man dubbed Colonel Rambo say he was tortured after his arrest in the CAR last month.

Alfred Yekatom drew his pistol and fired into the air in Parliament in Bangui when police came to arrest him.

ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda say this shows the man is prone to violent acts.

He will appear again on April 30 neat year to face charges of murder, mutilation, torture and recruiting child soldiers.

Yekatom led the Christian Anti Balaka  movement fighting Muslim Seleka rebels who overthrew President Francois Bozize in 2013.

Former Vice President and warlord Jean-Pierre Bemba has denounced the forthcoming presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a parody.

He was speaking after the country’s Constitutional Court upheld the electoral commission’s rejection of his candidacy in that election.

Jean-Pierre Bemba is one of six hopefuls rejected as presidential candidates by the DRC’s electoral commission.

The former vice president says the commission is ensuring victory for President Joseph Kabila’s successor Ramazani Shadary.

Bemba, who was vice president for three years from 2003, ran second to Kabila in the 2006 election.

His 2016 conviction for war crimes and crimes against humanity was overturned by the International Criminal Court last June.

However his conviction for bribing witnesses – which is the reason for his disqualification as candidate – still stands

Jean-Pierre Bemba’s return to the DRC poses problems for President Joseph Kabila who appears to be preparing to contest elections later this year.

Having the MLC leader in jail has suited Kabila because Bemba is more popular in Kinshasa.

Bemba was acquitted on appeal Friday by the International Criminal Court, who said he could not be held criminally liable for crimes committed by his troops in the Central African Republic in 2002-2003.

The International Criminal Court’s reported Jordan to the United Nations Security Council for not arresting Sudan’s President Omar al Bashir when he visited the Kingdom.

The legal institution is going a step further than it did against South Africa for failing to meet its obligations under the Rome Treaty establishing it.

Sudanese President Omar al Bashir visited Jordan last March for an Arab League summit.

The ICC reminded King Abdullah II that al Bashir is wanted on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Jordan made no attempt to detain the Sudanese leader…

… just as the South African authorities fell foul of the ICC and its own Supreme Court for failing to detain al Bashir when  he was in South Africa for the AU summit in 2015.

In the latter case the ICC rapped South Africa over the knuckles but did not refer the matter to the UN powerhouse.

Amnesty International says it’s documented more than 100 cases of detention and torture by Cameroon’s security forces.

The human rights watchdog Cameroon’s military and police of torturing hundreds of Boko Haram sympathizers in secret chambers.

Dozens of testimonies, as well as satellite imagery, photographs and videos add up to a pattern of terrible violence against people accused of supporting Boko Haram.

Amnesty International says it amounts to war crimes.

Photographs showed American military personnel visiting one notorious site, raising the possibility that they were there while torture was being carried out. Men and women described being beaten with electrical cables, chains, batons, planks of wood studded with nails, being permanently chained up, hit on the soles of their feet with machetes and, in the case of one Muslim, being forced to eat pork.

The International Criminal Court says it will hold a public hearing next April to probe whether South Africa failed in its duty by refusing to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir when  he visited  Johannesburg last year.

As a signatory of the Rome Statute, South Africa’s obliged to hold Bashir who’s wanted by the court for war crimes and genocide in Darfur

The announcement from the Hague follows last year’s dispute when President Omar al Bashir attended an African Union summit.

The Sudanese leader was able to leave despite a South African High Court ruling that he be held pending its judgment.

The Appeal Court’s  accused government of disgraceful conduct and ruled that failure to arrest Bashir was unlawful.

Government maintains Bashir had immunity as an AU head of  state.

It has subsequently given notice that it is leaving this ICC.

But this does not exonerate it from its obligations while still a signatory.
